Unlike Isola dei Pescatori, the neighboring island three minutes north by boat, which retains a small year-round population and operates several family-run inns, Isola Bella was designed as a theater—a place to be seen and admired, not inhabited. The decision to keep it free of commercial lodging has preserved the garden's original layout, where every sightline was calibrated for procession rather than privacy. Visitors planning to stay near Isola Bella base themselves in Stresa, the lakeside town two kilometers east, where hotels and vacation apartments line the promenade and ferries depart every thirty minutes during daylight. The crossing takes eight minutes. Most visitors buy a timed entry ticket in advance, board the 10:00 or 11:00 departure, spend two to three hours walking the palace rooms and the ascending garden levels, then return to Stresa for lunch. A few extend the loop to include Isola dei Pescatori or Isola Madre, the third Borromean island, which lies twenty minutes north and shares the same ticketing system. The question of whether you can stay on Isola Bella often reflects a misunderstanding about scale. The island measures 320 meters end to end. There are no roads, no restaurants outside the small seasonal café near the ticket hall, and no infrastructure beyond what serves the monument itself.
